This morning I decided to go to my car on a break and listen to The Herd show with Colin Cowherd on ESPN. He has some interesting commentary on sports to say the least. In this particular segment, he was discussing the controversy with Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys and the recent issue of the score board/jumbo tron in their new stadium...this is an over $1 million dollar problem to fix btw.
He basically said that Jerry was recently quoted as saying something to the effect that the gigantic screen that was hanging low was like in baseball where dimensions of the field, etc aren't always the same and are just part of the field, if you will. Like the Green Monster in Boston is only 315 ft from home plate(a more common distance is 330 ft), and its something like 30 ft high!
Cowherd made an interesting point though. He basically said that, although Jerry Jones is a good talker and salesman, baseball and football just can't be compared when it comes to the rigidness of the rules. For instance, in NFL football, if one team's headsets go out, then the other team HAS to cut theirs off. In baseball, you can wear baggy pants and chains hanging down, but in foot ball EVERYTHING has to be unbiasedly equal. Baseball doesn't have instant replay and the coaches wear the same clothes as the players. I agree with Colin though, that Jones makes a good point, but I don't see the NFL buying this sell.
He also said that Jones is a hunch guy...like he built the screen on a hunch that it'd be alright, but again Colin was right that you just can't go one hunches all the time in life. Another excellent point was that if I'm not mistaken the NFL wants him to fix the problem...however, everything was in code and up to specs, so its really an NFL problem.
The point of me writing this summary, is that we are all responsible for our actions. Whether good or bad results or decisions in judgement, morality or ethics. Weather a government, corporation or individual, part of being an adult is realizing and recognizing that you goofed up(in this case the NFL with their specs of what is ok) and have to deal with the consequences or results. Which may involved having to do something that we adults also don't like to do...apologizing.
