iDull

My colleague Arnold gave me a CD with some Tim Keller talks on it the other week. I listened to the 1st one yesterday and sure enough it was on idols. Yes, that favorite topic that I love to avoid. Question, does anyone else read that first commandment about not having any other idols and sort of say to themselves "umm, sure no problem, ok, next". I do. Waaaay tooo much too. See, I think to myself "idol, I don't need no stinkin idol. I worship and serve the God of the universe. Who needs to trade that for an idol!"

What that thought is, is a load of garbage. That thought in and of it self has set up the self righteousness idol(and probably a few others). That thought is only placed on those moment when I'm thankful or in need of God for something. When I'm in a spot where my mind and heart is obviously directed toward God. That thought doesn't consider the times when I want happiness via every ones approval or happiness via success.

Our pastor at our church has been going over this very topic lately. I think John Calvin was a pretty smart guy to say the least, so I think he was on to something when he said that our hearts are idol making factories. So how can we stop this idolatry factory? Well, I suppose reliance on God. Realization that Christ is our only source of satisfaction anywhere and in all circumstance and living that out. Recognizing those idols in our life...you know the one thing I might add to Mr. Keller's talk might be that I'm in ultimate reliance on God to show me those idols and fill me with the Holy Ghost that I might overcome those idols. ehh, I'm still working on it...Lord help me.
